La costa oeste de Australia es una de las partes más inexploradas por los turistas
y viajeros. Si bien, he de decir que en los últimos años cada vez son más las
personas que se aventuran a conocer la que es, para mí, la región más bonita
del país. La ciudad más grande, y su capital, es Perth, considerada como una de
las más aisladas del planeta. Como dato curioso, está más cerca de Timor
Oriental o Yakarta, en Indonesia, que de las urbes australianas de Sydney o
Melbourne. Sus playas son impresionantes, y algunas de las famosas son las que
se encuentran en la pequeña isla de Rottnest.
The west coast of Australia is one of the
most unexplored parts for tourists and travelers. Although, I must say that in
recent years more and more people are venturing to know what is, for me, the
most beautiful region of the country. The largest city, and its capital, is
Perth, considered one of the most isolated on the planet. As a curious fact, it
is closer to East Timor or Jakarta, in Indonesia, than to the Australian cities
of Sydney or Melbourne. Its beaches are impressive, and some of the famous ones
are those found on the small Rottnest Island.
Rottnest,
coloquialmente conocida como Rotto, está ubicada a 18 kilómetros de Fremantle,
uno de los barrios más conocidos de Perth. Para acceder a ella es necesario
coger un ferry o bien, ir en helicóptero. Si os interesa esta última opción,
algo más costosa, podéis reservar vuestro traslado a través de Scenic Flight
Booker. Yo opté por la primera, reservé mis tickets con la empresa Rottnest Express y en tan sólo 30 minutos estaba pisando el paraíso.
Rottnest, colloquially known as
Rotto, is located 18 kilometers from Fremantle, one of Perth's best-known
neighborhoods. To access it you need to take a ferry or go by helicopter. If
you are interested in this last option, a little bit more expensive, you can
book your transfer through Scenic Flight Booker. I opted for the first one and
booked my tickets with the Rottnest Express company and in just 30 minutes I
was stepping into paradise.
El
archipiélago tiene una superficie de 19 kilómetros cuadrados y la única manera
de recorrerla es en bicicleta. Al reservar el ferry, Rottnest Express os dará
la opción de alquilar una, así como un equipo de snorkel, para que buceéis en
las aguas transparentes de Rotto. Nada más llegar, os entregarán la que se
convertirá en una extensión de vuestro cuerpo durante vuestra estancia en la
isla. Yo fui tan sólo un día, y he de decir que no me pareció suficiente así
que si contáis con más tiempo, os recomiendo que le dediquéis, por lo menos,
dos jornadas.
The archipelago has an area of 19
square kilometers and the only way to get to know it is by bicycle. When
booking the ferry, Rottnest Express will give you the option to rent one, as
well as a snorkel equipment, so you can dive in the transparent waters of
Rotto. As soon as you arrive, they will give you all the equipment. I was only
one day, and I have to say that I think it was not enough, so if you have more
time, I recommend you to expend at least two days.
Lo
mejor es coger el ferry que sale a primera hora de la mañana, de esta manera
tendréis tiempo para hacer una primera toma de contacto mientras esperáis a que
lleguen las 11:15 para embarcaros en el Adventure Boat. Esta experiencia tiene
un coste extra pero merece la pena ya que os darán una vuelta de hora y media alrededor
de Rotto y os explicarán la fauna y flora que la componen. Además, podréis ver
focas, águilas marinas, mantas rayas e incluso ballenas y delfines, dependiendo
de la época del año.
The best option is taking the ferry that leaves early in the
morning so you will have time to make a first contact while you wait until
11:15 to embark on the Adventure Boat. This experience has an extra cost but it
is worth it since they will take you for an hour and a half tour around Rotto
explaining the fauna and flora of the place. In addition, you can see seals,
ospreys, stingrays and even whales and dolphins, depending on the time of year.
Al
acabar, y por vuestra cuenta, podéis empezar a dar la vuelta en bicicleta. Mi
primera parada fueron las Henrietta Rocks, una sección rocosa de 400 metros que
separa la playa de Patterson de la bahía de Porpoise. En Porpoise fue donde el
capitán holandés Willem de Vlaming llegó por primera vez y tuvo su encuentro
con los quokkas, un marsupial que habita en toda la isla y considerado como el
animal más feliz del mundo por su permanente sonrisa. A su llegada, Vlaming
confundió a estos pequeños mamíferos con ratas y decidió ponerle a la isla el
nombre que tiene hoy en día, Rottnest: nido de ratas.
When the adventure boat finishes,
you can start cycling around the island. My first stop was the Henrietta Rocks,
a 400 meter rock section that separates Patterson Beach from Porpoise Bay. In
Porpoise was where the Dutch captain Willem de Vlaming arrived for the first
time and had his encounter with the quokkas, a marsupial that inhabits the
whole island and considered as the happiest animal in the world for his
permanent smile. At his arrival, Vlaming confused these small mammals with rats
and decided to named the island as Rottnest: rat's nest.

no tuve la suerte de encontrármelos en Porpoise pero los vi en la siguiente
parada: Parker Point, el que, según me contaron, es uno de los mejores sitios
para bucear por su coral y también donde paran la mayoría de los barcos
privados que visitan el archipiélago. Tras un rato jugando con los quokkas, a
los que te puedes acercar sin problema, volví a coger la bici y seguí la ruta
hasta llegar a Little Salmon Bay, una de mis playas preferidas en Rottnest. Su
arena blanca, las rocas que la componen, y sus aguas cristalinas me
impresionaron desde el primer momento así que me quedé a descansar y decidí
volver ahí a ver el atardecer.
I wasnt lucky enough to meet them in Porpoise but I saw them
at the next stop: Parker Point, which, according to what they told me, is one
of the best places to dive for its coral and also where most of the private
boats that visit the archipelago stop. After a while playing with the quokkas,
animals that you can approach without problem, I took the bike once again and
followed the route until I got to Little Salmon Bay, one of my favorite beaches
in Rottnest. Its white sand, the rocks that compose it, and its crystal clear
waters impressed me from the first moment so I stayed to rest and decided to go
back there to see the sunset.
Posteriormente,
pasé por Salmon Bay y tomé la carretera que cruza la isla por el Pink Lake, un
lago que en determinadas épocas del año destaca por su color rosa, no en esta
ocasión. Desde la orilla del mismo se puede divisar el faro Wadjemup, el primer
faro construido en Rottnest en 1849, para que los barcos pudiesen acceder de
mejor manera a Fremantle y Swan River Colony. Esta vía me llevó a visitar
Little Parakeet Bay, Parakeet Bay, y Geordie Bay, donde se encuentran la mayor
parte de apartamentos turísticos y desde donde vi a un grupo de personas
jugando con las mantas rayas. Pasada Geordie Bay, está ubicada la playa
Longreach, la que más me gustó después de Little Salmon Bay, y en consecuencia
donde volví a parar a recargar energías.
After this, I passed through Salmon
Bay and took the road that crosses the island by the Pink Lake, a lake that at
certain times of the year stands out for its pink colour, not this time though.
From the shore of the lake you can see the Wadjemup lighthouse, the first
lighthouse built in Rottnest in 1849, so that the boats could better access to
Fremantle and Swan River Colony. This route took me to visit Little Parakeet
Bay, Parakeet Bay, and Geordie Bay, where most of the tourist apartments are
located and from where I saw a group of people playing with the stingrays.
After Geordie Bay, I arrived to Longreach beach, the one I liked the most after
Little Salmon Bay, and because of this where I stopped again to recharge
energy.
Por
último, me dirigí a la zona más popular de Rottnest, siempre llena de gente:
The Basin y Pinky Beach. Ambos sitios son espectaculares pero suelo preferir
las zonas más calmadas por lo que no les dediqué mucho tiempo. Eso sí,
indispensable subir a la base del faro Bathurst, construido en 1900, para
obtener las mejores vistas hacia The Basin. Y por desgracia, llegaron las 18:30
de la tarde, momento en el que salía el último ferry de vuelta a Perth así que
me despedí de Rottnest con el pensamiento de volver en cuanto vuelva a visitar
la capital de Western Australia.
Last but not least, I went to the most popular area of
Rottnest, always full of people: The Basin and Pinky Beach. Both sites are
spectacular but I prefer the quieter areas so I did not spend much time.
Nevertheless, I recommend you to visit the Bathurst lighthouse’s base, built in
1900, to get the best views of The Basin. And unfortunately, it was 6:30 p.m.,
when the last ferry to Perth was leaving so I had to say goodbye to Rottnest
with the strong thought of returning as soon as I go back to the
capital of Western Australia.
