Una de las actividades más destacadas del invierno australiano es el tour de avistamiento de ballenas, que se da
sobre todo en el norte de las Antípodas. Estas visitas organizadas suelen
empezar a funcionar a finales del mes de mayo extendiéndose hasta noviembre,
cuando el verano vuelve a comenzar. La emigración de estos grandes mamíferos se
debe a su huida de las frías temperaturas del agua del Antártico. En su
estancia en Australia, aprovechan para tener a sus ballenatos y criarlos antes
de volver a emprender rumbo a casa.
One of the
most common activities of the Australian winter is the whale watching tour,
which occurs mainly in the north of the Antipodes. These organized tours usualy
start to operate at the end of May until Novembre, when the summer starts
again. The emigration of this massive mammals is due to their escape from the
cold water temperatures of the Antartic. During their stay in Australia, they
take advantage to have their calves and breed them before heading home again.
Hay una gran diversidad de empresas que ofrecen sus
servicios para poder conocer a las ballenas. Una de ellas es Spirit of the Gold Coast, situada
obviamente en Gold Coast, y considerada como una de las mejores opciones ya que
lleva trabajando en ello más de 20 años. Además, la costa este de Australia es una de las mejores zonas donde poder ver
a los cetáceos. Los precios suelen rondar los 100$ e incluyen dos horas y media
de visita, más un pequeño tentempié. Sin embargo, a menudo se pueden encontrar
ofertas en portales web como Groupon, donde suele estar a mitad de precio.
There is a
wide variety of companies offering their services to meet the whales. One of
them is Spirit of the Gold Coast, obviously located on the Gold Coast, and
considered as one of the best options because it has been working for over 20
years. In addition, the east coast of Australia is one of the best places to
see the whales. Prices tend to be around $100 and include two and a half hours
of visit plus a small snack. However, you can often find deals on websites like

Un dato a tener en cuenta es que son animales en libertad y por tanto hay
días en los que se pueden ver muchas ballenas y otros en los que apenas salen a
la superficie. Y esto es lo que nos pasó desgraciadamente a nosotros. Días
antes a nuestro tour pudieron ver incluso a una ballena blanca, que se cree que podría tratarse de Migaloo, conocida internacionalmente. Nosotros
vimos alguna que otra pero debían de estar cansadas ya que casi no saltaban. Por
eso es importante también contratar el tour con una buena agencia, ya que en el
caso de no verlas adecuadamente suelen darte un ticket de descuento para que
puedas volver a ir, y este es el caso de Spirit of the Gold Coast.
One important
thing is to be aware that they are wild animals and therefore there are days
when you can see many whales and others you cant, because they prefer to be
underwater instead of popping up. And this is what happened to us
unfortunately. Days before to our tour they could even see a white whale and
they think it could be Migaloo, internationally known. We could see some of
them but I think they were tired (haha) because they almost didnt jump. That’s
why is important to book a tour with a good company, just in case you are not
able to see them properly, they would give you a discount ticket so you can go
again, and this is the case of Spirit on the Gold Coast.

Otro factor que no debe pasar por alto es que aunque
el invierno en el norte de Australia es bastante caluroso, hay grandes ráfagas
de viento que en alta mar se incrementan y por tanto hay que ir abrigado si no
se quiere pasar frio. Por último, recomendaros que toméis una o dos pastillas
para no marearos media hora antes de que salga el barco. Hay un gran porcentaje
de personas que se han mareado y no han podido disfrutar del avistamiento.
Other factor
that should be not overlooked is that even if the Austraian winter is hot,
there are great gusts of wind at the
ocean so you must take warm clothes if you dont want to be cold. Last but not
least, I would like to recommend you to take one or two seasick pills half and
hour before taking the boat. There is a great percentage of people who get sick
and can not enjoy the whale watching tour.
