Y cuando pensaba que no podía estar más enamorada de Australia, conocí la region de ‘The Kimberley’, una de las más inexploradas del país. Este área, ubicado al noroeste, de camino entre Perth y Darwin, es un paraíso ante los ojos de cualquiera. Tuve la suerte de recorrerlo por tierra hace un par de años y sus paisajes me impresionaron tanto que decidí dedicarle un poco más de tiempo y y me instalé en Broome, un pequeño pueblo costero que va creciendo cada año con la llegada de turistas locales y mochileros de todas partes del mundo.
Sus atractivos no son pocos, con playas de aguas turquesas que contrastan con las rocas rojizas propias del desierto en el que se encuentra. Y es que se trata de un área remota, al que aún es difícil de acceder, cosa que lo hace todavía más especial, ya que su potencial está aún por descubrir. Este el caso de las Horizontal Falls, un fenómeno natural que ocurre en el archipiélago de Buccaner. Aunque reciben el nombre de cascadas, se trata de unas corrientes de marea muy potentes que atraviesan dos estrechas gargantas con la llegada de la marea alta.
Esta “maravilla del mundo”, como así lo describe el naturalista David Attenborough, es de difícil acceso, siendo necesario contratar un tour. Yo tuve la suerte de poder hacerlo gracias a Scenic Flight Booker, donde podéis encontrar los mejores vuelos escénicos en Australia y Nueva Zelanda.
Mi aventura comenzó temprano, concretamente sobre las 5:30 de la mañana, momento en el que me pasaron a recoger para poner rumbo al aeropuerto de Broome y embarcarme en el hidroavión que me llevaría hasta la base acuática de las Horizontal Falls. Nunca antes había hecho un viaje en este tipo de avión y he de decir que fue impresionante. El poder ver la fuerza del agua atravesando las dos gargantas desde lo alto fue una sensación maravillosa que solo mejoraría con la siguiente parte del tour: cruzarlas en un barco rápido y poderlas apreciar de cerca, con el agua salpicándote y una adrenalina en el pecho imposible de describir.
De vuelta a la base, el staff de Horizontal Falls nos tenía preparado un desayuno súper completo que nos daría la energía para continuar el tour, no sin antes presentarnos a los tiburones ‘Tawny’ que habitan en toda la region, coexistiendo con algún que otro cocodrilo que por suerte o por desgracia, no pudimos conocer.
Ya con el estómago lleno, nos volvimos a subir al barco para conocer Cyclon Creek y la geología de este lugar tan espectacular, caracterizado por sus formaciones rocosas de color rojizo. El paseo fue más tranquilo que el anterior y me transmitió una paz que hacía tiempo que no sentía.
El broche final al tour fue la vuelta en hidroavión, recorriendo los archipiélagos de Buccaner y pasando por Cape Leveque, o Kooljaman, como lo llaman los aborígenes de la comunidad Bardi Jawi, a la que pertenece este cabo. Posteriormente, nos fuimos acercando de nuevo a Broome sobrevolando otros sitios populares en la zona como la granja de perlas de Willie Creek, la famosa playa de Cable Beach o el emblemático Gantheaume Point.

And when I thought I could not be more in love with Australia, I arrived to the region of 'The Kimberley', one of the most unexplored in the whole country. This area, located northwest, on the way between Perth and Darwin, is a paradise to the eyes of anyone. I had the luck of crossing it by land a couple of years ago and its landscapes impressed me that much that I decided to dedicate a little more time to it and I settled in Broome, a small coastal town that grows every year with the arrival of local tourists and backpackers from everywhere in the world.
Its attractions are not few, with beaches of turquoise waters that contrast with the typical reddish rocks of the desert in which it is located. As a remote area, it is still difficult to access, which makes it even more special, since its potential is yet to be discovered. This is the case of the Horizontal Falls, a natural phenomenon that occurs in the Buccaner archipelago. Although they are called waterfalls, they are very powerful tidal currents that cross two narrow gorges when high tide.

My adventure started early, more specifically around 5:30 in the morning, when I was picked up to head to Broome airport and board in the seaplane that would take me to the aquatic base of the Horizontal Falls. I had never made a trip on this type of plane before and I have to say it was impressive. Being able to see the strength of the water crossing the two gorges from above was a wonderful sensation that would only improve with the next part of the tour: crossing them in a fast boat and being able to appreciate them up closer, with the water splashing and an adrenaline in the chest hard to describe.
Back at the base, the staff of Horizontal Falls had prepared a super breakfast that would give us the energy to continue the tour, but not before introducing us to the 'Tawny' sharks that inhabit the entire region, coexisting with crocodiles that, luckily or unfortunately, we could not meet.
With a full stomach, we jumped back onto the boat to see Cyclon Creek and the geology of this spectacular place, characterized by its reddish rock formations. The walk was calmer than the previous one and it gave me a peace that I had not felt for a long time.
The final highlight of the tour was the return by seaplane, touring the archipelago of Buccaner and passing through Cape Leveque, or Kooljaman, as it is called by the aborigines of the Bardi Jawi community, to which this cape belongs. Subsequently, we were again approaching Broome flying over other popular sites in the area such as Willie Creek pearl farm, the famous Cable Beach or the iconic Gantheaume Point.
